There is something magic in the name KURENT … Every year hundreds of thousands of people wander into the oldest Slovenian town, Ptuj, "just" to see the traditional Kurentovanje, the oldest and largest Carnival happening in Slovenia. As the saying goes, who is not there, simply does not exist! The show starts with Candlemas, when the Kurents gather at midnight for their first jump, while the Carnival itself starts with the meeting of the typical Slovenian Carnival figures and masks. The performance…s continue day by day, through Kurentovanje - with the participation of kindergarden and school children, street artists, theatres, musicians, dancers and folk dancers, wind bands, folk singers and musicians, ethnographic societies, carnival groups and of course Kurents. The evenings bring great amusement and a lot of good food and drinks, and the merrymaking continues in the Carnival Hall with the performance of popular local and foreign music bands. The peak of the festivities is on Shrove Sunday with a traditional Carnival procession, and everything ends on Shrove Tuedsay with the Carnival burrial.
